Northern Pike - Esox Lucius
The northern pike are one of the most popular species for gamefishing in Sweden. Not only because it is very common and easy to catch. They can grow to really large size to. Meny fishermen have their childhood memories of haveing caught a really big fish ( in the view of a child) and want to catch an even bigger fish.
The past few year the fishing for pike have grown to one of the biggest fishing technics in Sweden and each year there are hundreds of registred fishes over 100 cm and 10 kg. In Stugun we have in my oppinion one of the best pikefishing areas in mid sweden. Here we now give you the opporturnity to visit and share our green "gold" for a few days.
Esox Lucius hard facts:
Northern pike is average 46-51 cm (18-20 inches) in length. But it´s not unusual that they get up to 120 cm (45-50 inches) and can weight over 17 kilos !
The fish are an aggressive, solitary fish. They are typically lurkers, but are able to attack quickly. Considerd "sprint predators", Esox lucius hide in some type of cover, cocked in an "S" position, ready to strike. They are very territorial and also cannibalistic. Their eyes are highly movable and are able to see in practically any direction. This is extremely important in tracking their prey.
They occur in clear lakes, quiet pools and backwaters of creeks and small to large riverslakes with plenty of vegetation They need a habitat with a neutral alkaline PH and high oxygene level. And prefer water tempertures from 10 to 28°C and depth range 0 - 30 m in fresh and brackish water.
With sharp teeth and very complex skull they feed on both smaller fish, frogs, crayfish, small mammals as rats and even birds.
